China travel translation · Checked Aug 3, 2026

Translation for menus, screenshots, taxis and no-signal moments.

Before you fly, prepare one camera or screenshot method, one offline fallback you have tested, and your hotel’s confirmed Chinese address. Do not make a single app—or a working data connection—the only way you can eat, check in or get back.

Start with the moment

What are you trying to translate?

The right workflow changes with the task. Pick the moment that can stop your next step.

Make your setup survive airplane mode

Tick each item only after testing it. Progress is saved in this browser on this device; TangTrails does not receive your answers.

Capability, not rankings

Choose a method for the task—and verify it on your phone

These are current, source-linked capabilities rather than an untested “best app” ranking. Interfaces, language support, access and offline behavior can change.

Apple Translate

Apple Support
Verified use

Camera view and photos on supported iPhones; downloaded languages for on-device translation.

Offline plan

Download both input and output languages, enable On-Device Mode, then test it yourself.

Important limit

Apple says offline translations may be less accurate. Availability varies by language, device and region.

Verified use

Text, photos, speech and camera translation on supported devices.

Offline plan

Google documents downloaded languages and offline camera translation for supported language packs.

Important limit

Live service access depends on your network. Download and airplane-mode test before departure.

Verified use

Photo or gallery-image translation in its mobile apps; screenshot and image workflows on desktop.

Offline plan

Do not assume offline access: check the current app and plan a separate offline fallback.

Important limit

DeepL says handwriting may not translate accurately; free-plan image translation has limits.

Verified use

Long-press message translation and Scan → Translate for photographed text in the current government guide.

Offline plan

Treat it as a connected, in-app option rather than your only offline method.

Important limit

Menus and labels can move between versions. Check the current interface on your own phone.

Verified use

The official launch describes one-tap translation of Chinese-language pages and other visitor services.

Offline plan

No offline claim is made here.

Important limit

The cited official release confirmed availability in some Android app stores; it does not support an iOS availability claim.

A useful test takes two minutes.Open a saved Chinese screenshot, translate it, then switch on airplane mode and repeat. Test camera, screenshot and typed text separately: an “offline” label does not necessarily mean every mode works offline.

Chinese app screen

Translate one decision, not an entire app

Chinese services increasingly add multilingual or built-in translation features, so check the current app first. When you still need a screenshot, preserve the path back to the right button.

  1. Check Settings, language and the long-press menu. WeChat’s current government guide documents long-press message translation and Scan → Translate for photographed text.
  2. Capture only the step you need. Crop out passport details, payment information, QR credentials, private chats and other content the translator does not need.
  3. Keep the original beside the translation. A translated layout can move or shorten labels. Return to the original screen before tapping a payment, refund or identity action.
  4. Confirm irreversible actions. Check amounts, dates, passenger names and cancellation terms with the original provider. Use the payment guide or attraction booking guide for the actual workflow.

Free local tool

Make a driver-ready Chinese address card

Copy the Chinese place name and address from your hotel, ticket confirmation or a local map that can confirm the actual listing. This tool formats what you enter; it does not translate, search or verify it.

Use the actual Chinese listing. Do not guess a translation of a brand or station name.

Local and private: your text stays in this page and is not stored or sent to TangTrails. Do not enter passport, payment or medical information.

Static offline backup

Short phrase cards for the first day

Short text is easier to show, check and repeat. Copy or open a card in large type, then let the other person respond in writing when details matter.

Taxi

师傅您好,请带我去这个地址。

Hello, driver. Please take me to this address.

Restaurant

有英文菜单吗?

Do you have an English menu?

Restaurant

这道菜是什么?

What is this dish?

Restaurant

这道菜辣吗?

Is this dish spicy?

Restaurant

我不吃辣。

I do not eat spicy food.

Restaurant

我要这个。

I’ll have this one.

Restaurant phrases are drawn from the Hainan Provincial Government travel guide, checked August 3, 2026. The driver line is a general communication aid, not a verified address.

When the result looks wrong

Reduce the problem before trying another app

01

Small, stylized or reflective text

Move closer, improve light, hold the camera still and crop to one block. DeepL explicitly warns that handwriting can be inaccurate.

02

A dish or place name sounds absurd

Keep the Chinese original. Ask what it is, look up the official/local listing and avoid treating a fluent English phrase as proof.

03

Numbers, dates or choices matter

Ask the other person to type or point. Repeat the date, time, price, quantity or terminal separately before you commit.

Do not delegate these decisions to translation

A readable sentence can still be the wrong answer

  • Allergy and medical safety: translation cannot inspect ingredients or replace clinical communication. See medical and safety.
  • Medication entry: a translated drug name does not decide customs status. See bringing medication to China.
  • Entry and legal documents: use the issuing authority or a qualified professional. See current entry-rule sources.
  • Final destination: machine translation cannot verify the right branch, station, entrance, building or terminal. Confirm it with the provider or local listing.

Quick answers

China translation FAQ

What is the best translation app for China travel?

There is no single best app for every task. Compare verified camera, screenshot, conversation and offline capabilities for your own phone, then test one primary method and one fallback before departure.

Does Google Translate work in China?

Connected features depend on the network path and current service availability, so a universal yes or no is not reliable. Google documents downloadable language packs and offline camera translation for supported languages. Download what you need and test it in airplane mode before your trip.

Can I translate a Chinese menu with my camera?

Apple, Google and DeepL currently document camera or photo translation on supported devices. Photograph a clear section, keep the original Chinese visible and confirm the actual dish with staff. A translation cannot verify ingredients or allergy safety.

How do I translate a Chinese QR menu or app screen?

First look for an English or built-in translate option. Otherwise capture only the relevant screen, crop out private details and translate that image with a trusted system or app. Keep the original open so you can match the translated label to the right button.

What should I save offline before landing in China?

Save a tested language pack, your hotel’s confirmed Chinese name and full address, its telephone number, first-day destinations and a small set of phrase cards. Keep a second method in case one app or network path fails.

Can TangTrails translate my screenshot now?

No. This page currently provides a free preparation checklist, a local address-card formatter and fixed phrase cards. TangTrails AI Travel Lens is an early-access concept and is not available to use or buy today.

Can a translation app tell me whether a dish is safe for my allergy?

No. Translation can help you ask a question, but it cannot confirm actual ingredients, substitutions, kitchen practice or cross-contact. Use the food and medical-safety guides and confirm directly with the restaurant.

Should I machine-translate my hotel name for a taxi?

No. Copy the Chinese place name and address from a source that can confirm the actual listing, such as your hotel, booking confirmation or a local map. Add the telephone number, entrance or terminal when relevant.

Can I use this page for medical, legal or certified translation?

No. Use a qualified human interpreter or translator and confirm important decisions with the relevant institution. TangTrails is a travel-preparation guide, not an interpreting or certified-translation service.
