Bringing medication to China: prepare, declare or confirm?
Small personal-use quantities may fit the general rule. The ingredient, amount, documents and transport method decide what you must verify next.

Documentation, declaration and official-confirmation routes only
It never produces a legal, medical or Customs clearance result. Complete the questions to prioritize the work below.
The current answer in four parts
“Personal use” is a starting condition—not automatic permission
Ordinary personal use
Current Customs guidance uses small quantity, personal use and reasonable quantity for non-narcotic, non-psychotropic medicine.
No universal day count
The official public sources reviewed do not establish one 30-day or 90-day rule for every medicine and traveler.
Controlled is a separate route
Narcotic and psychotropic categories have separate quantity and document rules. Brand-name familiarity is not classification.
Documents do not approve
A prescription, doctor’s letter, diagnosis record or original package can explain medical need; none overrides the authority’s decision.

Build the evidence before the airport asks
These items make the medicine and its purpose easier to explain. They are preparation—not approval, pre-clearance or a replacement for a current Customs answer.
Document and packing checklist
Packaging boundary: original packaging is prudent official consular advice, not a universal guarantee under Chinese law.
Current passenger declaration process
Do not guess between the red and green channels
Customs Announcement No. 43 of 2025 requires written or electronic declaration for prohibited items; restricted items above limits or requiring permits or proof; and other legally declarable baggage. It does not state that every ordinary prescription automatically needs a written declaration.
Read GACC Announcement No. 43 of 2025- Known requirementAn authority says it is restricted, over a limit or needs proof
Follow the applicable declaration instructions, complete the form/data and use the declared/red-channel process.
- Uncertain caseClassification, amount or documents are unresolved
Contact the intended port Customs before departure. Current Customs medicine guidance recommends documents and proactive declaration.
- At the portPresent the medicine and documents—do not hide the uncertainty
On-site Customs review controls. A saved email, prescription or doctor’s letter does not bind the officer’s decision.
Controlled or unknown ingredient
Stop at the category boundary and ask the authority
China’s regulation says an individual who needs narcotic or Category I psychotropic medicine for treatment may carry no more than the single-prescription maximum, with a medical diagnosis certificate and proof of identity. Customs applies the personal-use and reasonable-quantity principles.
The exact active ingredient, formulation and current effective catalogue matter. TangTrails does not classify a medicine, interpret the single-prescription maximum or turn a home-country prescription into China clearance.

Bring the facts needed for a case-specific answer
Use the template with the Customs authority for your intended entry port. It prepares a complete question; it does not submit anything or prove approval.
I will enter mainland China at [PORT] on [DATE] and leave on [DATE]. I need to carry [BRAND NAME], active ingredient [GENERIC / CHEMICAL NAME], [DOSAGE FORM], [STRENGTH], total quantity [QUANTITY], for my own prescribed treatment. It is prescribed by [MEDICAL INSTITUTION / COUNTRY]. I can provide [PRESCRIPTION / DIAGNOSIS CERTIFICATE / MEDICAL RECORD / ORIGINAL LABELLED PACKAGING]. Please confirm: 1. Whether China currently classifies this exact ingredient and formulation as a narcotic or Category I / II psychotropic substance; 2. The maximum quantity I may personally carry; 3. Whether advance permission, a specific certificate, translation or other proof is required; and 4. How I should declare it at this port.
Cold, liquid, injectable or powered
A Customs answer does not make the transport plan safe
Temperature stability belongs to your clinician/pharmacist and manufacturer instructions. Baggage acceptance belongs to every operating carrier. Confirm both before departure.

Medication entry FAQ
Questions that deserve a sourced answer
Can I bring prescription medication to China?
Current official guidance says small quantities of non-narcotic, non-psychotropic medicine may be carried for personal use, subject to reasonable-quantity review and Customs supervision. That is not automatic permission for every ingredient, formulation or amount. Controlled or uncertain medicine needs case-specific official confirmation.
How much medication can I bring to China?
The current public official sources reviewed do not give one day limit for every medicine and traveler. They use personal use and reasonable quantity. A multi-month, bulk or otherwise unusual supply should be confirmed with the Customs authority for the intended entry port before travel.
Is there a universal 30-day or 90-day medication limit?
Not in the current official sources reviewed. Do not treat a number from a forum or commercial guide as a China-wide clearance rule. Controlled categories have separate rules, including a single-prescription maximum for narcotic and Category I psychotropic medicine under the cited regulation.
Do I need a doctor’s letter or prescription?
China’s controlled-category regulation expressly refers to a medical diagnosis certificate and proof of identity for narcotic and Category I psychotropic medicine. Current Customs guidance recommends supporting documents such as prescriptions, medical records or diagnosis certificates. A letter helps explain medical need but does not create permission.
Should medication stay in its original packaging?
Keeping it in its original labelled pharmacy or manufacturer packaging is prudent official consular advice because the label connects the traveler, ingredient and strength. It is not a universal Chinese statutory guarantee and does not override quantity or controlled-category restrictions.
Do I have to declare medication at China Customs?
The 2025 Customs notice requires declaration for prohibited items, restricted items above limits or requiring permits or proof, and other legally declarable baggage. It does not say every ordinary prescription automatically requires written declaration. Current Customs medicine guidance advises carrying documents and proactively declaring medicine. For a controlled, unusual or uncertain case, ask the intended port Customs before departure and present it rather than guessing.
Can TangTrails check whether my medicine is controlled?
No. Classification can depend on the active ingredient, formulation and effective date of China’s current catalogues. TangTrails does not maintain a complete drug database, review prescriptions or issue clearance. Ask China Customs or the relevant Chinese authority about the exact ingredient and quantity.
What if I take ADHD, pain, anxiety, sleep or psychiatric medication?
These medicine groups can include ingredients that require closer review, but a group or brand name is not a legal classification. Identify every active ingredient and formulation, then obtain case-specific confirmation from China Customs before travel. Do not change treatment without your clinician.
How do I travel with insulin, injections or refrigerated medicine?
Ask your clinician or pharmacist for the storage range and excursion instructions, then confirm liquid, needle, cooling pack, dry ice, battery and cabin or hold rules with every operating carrier. Customs status and airline acceptance are separate decisions.
Can I mail more medication to China later?
Do not assume passenger-baggage rules apply to post or courier shipments. Mailing and importing medicine use separate rules; the cited regulation separately controls mailing narcotic and psychotropic substances. Confirm the exact postal and Customs process before shipping anything.
Can I refill a foreign prescription in China?
Do not assume so. Availability is separate from border permission, and official consular guidance notes that a clinician in China may make a new assessment before issuing a local prescription. Plan treatment continuity with your clinician before departure.
Does this guide cover Hong Kong or Macao?
No. This page covers entry into mainland China. Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and any transit country or region have their own medication rules and must be checked separately.
