Book and board through the official path
The city is not the station. Xi’andong Railway Station began operating on June 30, 2026—one fresh example of why an old blog or a city name alone is not enough.
Check the exact station before you buy
A city can have several passenger stations. Compare the full station name, its Chinese characters and the transfer from your hotel—not just “Beijing,” “Shanghai” or “Xi’an.”
Complete the official identity path early
The current government guide says foreign travelers can enter the requested passport details for automatic verification, upload the passport information page for manual verification, or take the passport to a station ticket office.
Know who sold the ticket
12306 is China Railway’s official channel. A third-party seller has its own checkout, fees, support and change/refund process. Compare the final terms before paying.
Carry the original booking passport
China Railway says the valid identity document used to purchase the e-ticket is used to enter, exit and board. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding ticket.
Leave time for the unfamiliar parts
Allow time for security, identity checks and automatic or manual gates. Follow the live station display and staff instructions for the actual gate and platform.
12306 versus a third party
Compare responsibility before convenience
This is not an affiliate ranking. A third party can simplify an interface, but the final ticket still depends on China Railway availability and the seller’s current terms.

Do not assume: a pre-request is a confirmed ticket, a third party owns separate railway inventory, or a seller guarantees a waitlisted seat.

Use the failure, not guesswork, to choose the next step
Use an official verification route
Recheck the selected document and entered details. Follow the passport-page upload/manual-review prompt if offered; if you are still blocked, take the valid passport to a station ticket office. No review time is promised here.
Change the payment path, not the passenger
Confirm whether your bank blocked the transaction, try another currently supported method, or use a station ticket office. Keep the passenger details consistent with the travel document.
Search the official source again
Check nearby departure times and exact alternative stations in 12306. TangTrails does not show inventory, and a third party does not create separate China Railway seats.
Stop before the taxi leaves
Compare the ticket’s complete English and Chinese station name with your route. A north, south, east, west or newly opened station can be far from another station in the same city.

Open the current 12306 change rules or ask station staff immediately. A change depends on timing, capacity and current terms; this page does not promise availability or a free change.
Do not improvise the document

Metro, taxi and ride-hailing solve different failures
No “China-wide” payment shortcut is safe to assume. Choose by time, final walking leg, luggage, connectivity and the local operator.

A copied last-train time can be wrong for your terminal, direction, date or transfer. Build the road fallback before the flight is delayed.

What is the easiest way to get around China for a first-time visitor?
Start with high-speed rail for a direct intercity trip when the door-to-door total works, metro for routine city trips while it is operating, and a signed official taxi queue or designated ride-hailing zone for luggage, difficult last-mile connections or late arrival. Always check the exact station, current hours and a second payment path.
Can foreigners buy China train tickets on 12306 with a passport?
Yes, subject to the official identity-verification flow. Current government guidance describes automatic verification from entered passport details, passport-page upload for manual verification, and verification at a station ticket office. Complete the process early and use the exact document details requested.
Do I need a paper train ticket in China?
China Railway says an e-ticket passenger uses the original valid identity document used for purchase to enter, exit and board. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt cannot be used as the ticket.
What should I do if 12306 will not verify my passport?
Recheck that the selected document and entered details match your passport, follow the official passport-page upload or manual-review prompt if offered, or take the valid passport to a station ticket office. TangTrails cannot promise a review time or hidden workaround.
Is 12306 or Trip.com better for foreign travelers?

Should I take a high-speed train or fly between Chinese cities?
Compare the complete trip: hotel-to-terminal travel, required buffer, scheduled journey, baggage or exit time, and the onward trip to your next hotel. The calculator on this page totals your own current figures; scheduled train or flight duration alone is not enough.
Can I use a foreign bank card on the metro in China?
It depends on the city, operator, card and bank. Beijing currently supports contactless UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB and American Express across its subway network. Shanghai currently documents chip-enabled UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard at more than 500 stations. Do not assume the same support nationwide; keep a staffed-ticket, locally supported app or cash fallback where applicable.
Can a foreign visitor use DiDi in China?
China’s current national guide says DiDi-Greater China supports foreign mobile numbers and international credit cards for registration. App versions, account checks, bank approval, data service and vehicle availability can still fail, so keep an official taxi-queue fallback.
How do I show a taxi driver my hotel address?
Use the hotel-confirmed Chinese name, full Chinese address, district, entrance or landmark and phone number. The destination-card tool on this page formats what you enter; it does not translate, search or verify the address.
What if I arrive after the last airport train or metro?
Check the exact official line, direction and entry cutoff on your travel day, allowing for immigration, baggage and walking time. Preserve a signed official taxi queue, designated ride-hailing area or independently hotel-confirmed transfer as Plan B before you fly.
